Your Summer Sleep Guide ☀️

19th November 2025

Summer holidays are for memory-making, not clock-watching. Long, light evenings, sandy toes, spontaneous barbecues and late-night laughter, these are the things that fill our hearts. But any parent will tell you: overtired little ones can quickly turn sunshine into storm clouds.

That’s why we created this Summer Sleep Guide-to help you hold onto the joy of all things summer, without sacrificing the rest. Whether you’re heading abroad, camping in the garden, or simply navigating heatwaves and late sunsets at home, this guide is here to help you find freedom and sleep.

Go With the Flow

One of the most beautiful parts of summer is how it invites us to loosen our grip on routine. Days out, late meals, long car journeys. They rarely lend themselves to strict nap times or textbook bedtimes do they? And that’s okay. When routines bend a little, it doesn’t mean they’ll break. In fact, allowing flexibility in summer is a gift to your whole family. If your baby or toddler seems tired, let them nap (even if it’s in the car, a sling, or the pram). Don’t stress if it’s later than usual or shorter than normal. This season is temporary, and your little one’s body will bounce back with the right support.

Empowering truth: Responsive, intuitive parenting in the moment is far more valuable than rigidly sticking to a schedule. This is the single most important take home of this blog.

Forget the Rules (Just for Now)

Sleep might feel a bit messier while you’re away, and that’s totally normal. Early wake-ups, contact naps, skipped naps, and late bedtimes are all par for the course on holiday.

You’re not creating bad habits- you’re making memories. A week or two of change won’t undo all the good work you’ve done. In fact, allowing your child to experience sleep in a variety of settings can be a powerful tool for building flexibility and confidence.

Empowering truth: Sleep skills don’t disappear with a few wobbly nights. You’ll get back on track, we promise.

Travelling Across Time Zones?

If your holiday takes you more than two hours away from your home time zone, give your baby or toddler a 24-hour grace period. On the first day, follow their tired cues and let them nap when they need to regardless of the local clock. From day two onwards, gently shift to the new time zone. Morning sunlight, outdoor play, and regular mealtimes can help anchor their body clock. Kids tend to adjust more quickly than we do-and they’ll surprise you with their resilience. You’ll see.

Empowering truth: Children’s circadian rhythms are adaptable. Small steps bring big change.

Off Day? Offset It

One tricky day doesn’t define your week. If your little one has a rough sleep day- maybe they skipped a nap or had a disrupted night- you can balance it out by offering a calmer, earlier bedtime the next day. Sleep is wonderfully forgiving. It stretches to meet your child’s needs over time. Think of it like a bank account: you can make deposits later to top things back up.

Empowering truth: You don’t need perfect days-just enough rest to restore balance.

Breathe Through It

Some summer moments will feel magical. Others will feel… messy. Tears, overtired tantrums, mosquito bites, broken travel cots, missed naps. It happens and it’s super normal.

When you find yourself in those moments, breathe. You’re not doing it wrong-you’re living it real. The best thing you can do is meet the moment with calm, compassion, and confidence. Sleep will settle again.

Empowering truth: It’s not all or nothing. You can hold both joy and challenge and still thrive.

Safe Sleep in the Summer

Just like in winter, safe sleep is non-negotiable-even when the sun is blazing and the nursery feels like a sauna. These simple tips will help you keep your baby safe and cool:

  • Keep the sleep space clear. No loose blankets, bumpers or toys-just a firm, flat mattress with a fitted cotton sheet and a safe sleep bag if using.
  • Focus on room temperature. Ideal sleep temp is 16–20°C. Use a room thermometer if you have one. Keep curtains or blinds closed during the day to block the heat.
  • Use fans safely. A fan is great for air circulation but don’t point it directly at your baby as this cools them peripherally but doesn’t cool their core body temperature down. A bowl of ice in front of it can help cool the air gently.
  • Freeze the comforter. If your baby uses a small comforter, pop it in a clean freezer bag and chill it for a cooling bedtime soother.
  • Expect more feeds. Babies often need extra milk (breast or bottle) in the heat. Offer water to toddlers freely. Hydration matters more than sticking to a schedule.

Empowering truth: Safety doesn’t need to be complicated. Simple steps make a big difference.

What Should My Baby Wear to Sleep in the Summer? (This can be our summer sleep door hook graphic if you’d like)

Dressing your baby for sleep during a heatwave can feel confusing- but we’ve got you. The key? Dress for the room temperature, not the weather outside. Here’s our gentle guide:

Room Temp: 16–20°C

  • Nappy
  • Cotton sleepsuit
  • 1.0 TOG sleeping bag

Room Temp: 21–24°C

  • Nappy
  • Cotton sleepsuit or short-sleeved vest

Room Temp: 25°C and above

  • Nappy
  • Cotton vest or just a nappy
  • 0.2 TOG sleeping bag (optional)

Trust your instincts-if your baby feels hot or sweaty, strip back. If they feel cool to the touch, add a layer. You can check their chest or back to gauge their true temperature.

Empowering truth: You are the expert on your baby. Your intuition matters.

You’ve Got This

Whether your summer is sun-soaked or stormy, home-based or holiday-bound, you are doing an incredible job. You are nurturing, loving, and showing up in ways your baby will never forget.
